real quick update...
I saw DJ Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop, spin at Levende Lounge last night. He's the guy who brought jamaican dancehall 'toasting' (ie talking over beats) and used 2 records to extend the break of a funk record. He was amazing. His priority is getting asses on the dance floor, and he brought the rock. I was up front the whole time. I got to meet the man who started all this shit, shake his hand and say thank you.

when i go out, i'll maybe dance 1/2 hour, maybe an hour, then just chill the rest of the time. I was dancing for over three hours tonight, so that should tell you something. hip-hop, funk, dancehall, all the good shit.

amazing.

when one guy was hanging out next to the decks too long, looking at what records Herc was playing, he said on the mic: "we got a biter in the house! move back over there! move back. I don't know you maaan!" he was giving shouts out to people the whole time, shortening some songs, extending others with two records, there wasn't one moment where people got off the floor. There was only one song he played that i thought was just a'ight. Straight fire.

I go to sleep now. My ears are still ringing.

sounds like an awesome time. currently reading the hip-hop historiography by Jeff Chang. DJ Kool Herc was mentioned in the first chapter, it's nice to know where it all started.
